Consignee: Meaning & How It’s Used In Shipping

A consignee is the person or company named as the authorized receiver of items at the final delivery point. It tells everyone involved who can accept handover and sign for receipt.

When is a Consignee used and why does it matter?

You’ll see a consignee listed anytime goods are being moved from one party to another, especially for business deliveries. It’s useful because it clearly answers: “Who is supposed to receive this?”

Use it when the receiver is not the same as the buyer, or when multiple sites could accept deliveries. It helps with driver instructions, gate passes, and making sure the right team is notified.

It is not a substitute for a purchase agreement. Being named doesn’t automatically explain who pays fees, handles damage claims, or owns the goods at every point.

If you change the receiver, update the delivery details early to avoid delays or failed drop-offs.

How does this relate to Transportify?

Transportify supports deliveries where the consignee details must be accurate and easy for drivers to follow. When you book, you can set the receiver’s name, contact number, and drop-off location so the pickup, routing, and handoff are smoother, especially for time-sensitive or multi-stop trips.
