HS Code Meaning: How It Is Used in Shipping

An HS Code is a standardized 6-digit number that labels what a product is in global trade. It helps set the right import taxes, apply rules, and reduce delays when paperwork is checked.

When is HS Code used?

Use an HS Code any time you prepare documents for importing or exporting, like a commercial invoice or product declaration. Getting it right is useful because it can:

  • prevent surprise fees from using the wrong rate
  • flag if your item needs extra permits or testing
  • make product data consistent across countries

It’s not a “shipping label” and it doesn’t decide your selling price. If you’re unsure, check your supplier’s specs, compare similar items, or ask a licensed broker to confirm the classification.

How Transportify fits in

Transportify moves goods and documents fast within the city, which supports trade workflows even before and after border processing. For example, you can use Transportify to send samples to a broker, deliver paperwork to your forwarder, or move released cargo from a port to your warehouse. While Transportify won’t choose your HS Code for you, we can help you meet cutoffs and keep your handoffs on schedule.
