Ex Works (EXW) Explained: Duties & Risks

Ex Works (EXW) is a trade term that says the seller’s job is basically to make the goods ready for pickup at their location. After that point, the buyer handles the rest: booking transport, paying export steps, and carrying most of the risk if something goes wrong.

When is EXW used?

Use EXW when the buyer has strong control over their carriers and wants to manage costs end-to-end. It can work well for experienced importers who already know the paperwork and have partners on the ground. The catch is that it shifts a lot of responsibility to the buyer, including arranging pickup, dealing with customs requirements, and covering damage or delays once the goods are made available. If you’re new to cross-border moves, this option can feel “cheap” upfront but get expensive in time, surprise fees, and stress.

How this connects to Transportify

Even if the seller only needs to stage the shipment, the pickup still has to happen smoothly. Transportify helps by providing on-demand and scheduled delivery options, clear pricing, and real-time tracking so you can coordinate pickups without endless calls. If you’re moving items from a factory, warehouse, or supplier site to a port, sorting center, or final destination, having a reliable local delivery partner keeps the first mile from turning into the biggest headache.
